day 8

Day 8 ~ I am thankful for my family.

On this eighth day of thankfulness, I am thankful for my family and my extended family. I am blessed with two brothers & their wives, nieces and nephews, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, grandparents and a slew of second and third cousins as well as great-aunts and uncles. I have blessed to know most of my extended family my entire life. I still have three of my grandparents, which in turn means my kids have three great-grandparents. It has been wonderful to watch them interact with my children.

But, I not blessed because I have a large family – although I do love that about us. No, I am blessed because my family is a family that believes, trusts and follows Jesus Christ. My brothers are both believers, which is a blessing during family events. No taboo topic to dance around – especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas when our focus should be about our Lord and Savior. Their wives are also believers and are wonderful help meets to my brothers – how could you not love them! They take care of my brothers and their households and my two nieces and nephew. Even though we live miles apart and even across an ocean, we get to “see” each other on occasion via video chats. (Isn’t technology wonderful?)

Two of my uncles are ministers and their wives are a big part of their ministries. My other uncle is an engineer and has helped me more times than I know with math homework through high school and college. His wife and another aunt, my Dad’s sister, are both teachers. Even though we homeschool our children, I am so proud of the witness they both are at their schools and the lives they touch each day. They are amazing!! (Not to mention that I can go to them with questions!) My cousins are all believers and those who are married, are married to believers. I cannot even tell you what a blessing that is!!! Several of my cousins are ministers themselves, while two of my female cousins are married to ministers. It’s a whole LOT of fun when we get together!!

My family loves music. I remember past Christmas’ and family gatherings where we have just gathered around the piano or a guitar and sang Christmas carols and praise songs for hours. There are no words to describe the feelings I get when I see and hear my family singing songs of praise to our Lord and Savior. There are no words!!!

While I only have three grandparents still on this earth, I was blessed with four amazing grandparents. They are/were not perfect, but they love(d) me no matter what. They have always encouraged me, stood by me in the difficult times, prayed for me when I rebelled, sat with me when I was sick in the hospital, came to welcome their newest great-grandchild at the hospital with love and snuggles, held my hand when I felt I couldn’t go on and let me talk to them about almost anything. They are strong in their faith and unwavering in their beliefs. I am blessed to call them my grandparents.

Is my family perfect? No! But, we love each other through it all. We are blessed to know that when someone leaves this world, they are finally HOME. And that…that is the greatest blessing of all – to know I will see them again!!!
