I hope you will join me this month as we travel from state to state across the USA.

It may seem like a strange state bird, but there is a unique and interesting history behind it. Learn about Delaware's state bird and color it with these FREE printables! ::

Today we’re traveling just a couple states down to Delaware, another state I’ve never visited. Delaware is 2nd smallest state, but holds so much history and beauty it makes up for its size. Delaware was one of the original 13 colonies participating in the American Revolution. And on December 7, 1787 it became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby giving it the title – The First State.

Today you can grab these State Bird Coloring Pages for Delaware. I chose this bird to highlight, because I thought it was unusual. Delaware’s state bird is the Blue Hen Chicken. This might make you laugh as it did me, because why would you choose a chicken for your state bird, but it had history in the state’s history. It was used for years as a motif in many political campaigns and in various publications. The men of Captain Jonathan Caldwell’s company, during the war, recruited in Kent County and took with them game chickens that were believed to be from the lineage of a famous Blue Hen and known for their fighting ability. When the men were not fighting, they would often pen their chickens against each other in cockfights, which is now illegal in all 50 states as well as a felony in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The word of these cockfights spread throughout the army and when in battle, the men fought with such vigor they were often compared to the fighting cocks. Read more about the bird here. The coloring pages are available in print for the pre-writers, dotted manuscript for early writers and dotted cursive for upper elementary.
