If you’ve missed any of the posts in our Across the USA in 31 Days series, you can start by going here. Every day this month I will bring you a small sample of printables from my larger eBook, which will be released later this month. I hope you will join me this month as we travel from state to state across the USA.
Let’s jet over to the southwest today and visit New Mexico. New Mexico joined the Union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. Although I have driven through New Mexico several times, there are a couple of places I visited that stick out to me. My parents and grandparents took a family trip when I was about 3 years old. The one place I remember we visited in NM, was White Sands National Monument. I rolled down the sand dunes and walked through barefoot. Those are precious memories. The other visit I remember is when I flew in to Albuquerque one summer on my way to the Navajo Indian Reservation, where I spent a week teaching music to the kids who lived there. We camped in tents on the reservation in the heat of the summer. It was such an amazing experience.
Today you can grab these State Bird Coloring Pages for New Mexico. The state bird is the Roadrunner. This is one of my favorite birds. When we would visit the zoo in Oklahoma, there was a Southwest building that included an open area for birds, rodents and such to run. It was always fun to try and spot the roadrunner as he ran around. Have the kids color one of the pictures while you read more about this bird or here and watch this video together. The coloring pages are available in print for the pre-writers, dotted manuscript for early writers and dotted cursive for upper elementary.
