We are Across the USA in 31 Days series. Every day this month I will bring you a small sample of printables from my larger eBook, which will be released later this month. I hope you will join me this month as we travel from state to state across the USA.
Living in Indiana, just a couple hours from Cincinnati, we have now visited Ohio a few times. We surprised this kids this summer and took them to the Cincinnati Zoo and an overnight stay in a hotel with a pool – a rare treat with 4 kids. They had more fun and the joy on their faces was worth every penny! We loved the Zoo so much, we even bought season passes and can’t wait to use them more this spring/summer, but we’ll get past winter first.
Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803. The state flower is the Scarlet Carnation. I can remember receiving carnations as part of a fundraiser in middle school on Valentine’s Day. Back then it was so fun to get carnations in varying colors, but looking back, it was also kinda sad for those who didn’t get any. I remember the vibrancy of the red carnations and just how pretty they were to look at throughout the day. They state legislature adopted the state flower in 1904, because it represented a token of love and out of reverence for the Ohio State Legislature president – William McKinley. The adoption was proposed by Legislator Elijah W. Hill and in his speech he said, “England has the rose, France has the lily; Ireland, the shamrock; Scotland, the thistle. These flowers awaken in the hearts of the natives of these countries memories of home, fireside, childhood days, sweet sorrows, family ties, and incidents of the land of their nativity. To these ends we seek to adopt the scarlet carnation as Ohio’s floral emblem.” Today you can download these Ohio State Flower Coloring Pages and let the kids color while you learn more about this flower. The coloring pages are available in print for the pre-writers, dotted manuscript for early writers and dotted cursive for upper elementary.
