In light of my post yesterday and my focus word for 2014 – LISTEN – I was prompted to write a series of posts that I hope will be both encouraging and challenging not only to me, but to you all as well. My focus word is LISTEN, but that entails so much more than just keeping my mouth shut. It requires action on my part. So over the next 12 months I will be GIVING UP something that I have placed as an idol in my life. This decision will not be taken lightly and it may not always be the popular thing to give up, but I am confident that it will be exactly what God wants me to give up.
My plan is to share what I’m giving up for the current month on the first of the month or thereabouts. I would love to invite you to join me in this 12 month campaign to refocus not only our lives, but our faith.
I don’t know where this journey will take us, but I know the Lord has laid this on my heart for my life. The beginning of a new year seems to be the time that we focus or refocus our attention to our health and fitness. While I am all for a new and fresh start to our health – what about our spiritual health? Why not start this new year with God in charge of what you should be changing in your life?
Some of the things the Lord has laid on my heart to give up are BIG things and some seem little in comparison. But, I don’t want to dismiss anything. I want to be led by Him in these decisions each month. It’s often in the little things that the Lord works the most. Something may seem trivial to us, but to Him they are what will mold us and shape us into the person He wants us to be.
Here’s a list of some things the Lord has brought to my mind and heart as of right now. These may or may not be what He calls me to focus on over the next year, but they are on the list and therefore in my prayers.
- Internet Time
- The Mess (similar to perfection)
- My Pride
- Working from Home v. Time with Family (setting boundaries)
Some of these overlap and so they may be combined into one month, but these are areas I know the Lord has been working on my life. But, changing everything at once can be and is overwhelming. So, taking small steps guided by Him each month to refocus my life and allow Him to permeate every part of it seems much more doable.
So after much prayer, this month – January – I will be focusing on GIVING UP MY TIME. What this means for me is to be more purposeful in my time. My time working on this blog, my time spent on the computer and my time spent with my children. I am not always a great manager of my time and quite often I fail miserably at “getting it all done” in a day. My prayer is that the Lord will guide me through my time spent with Him to what is important for the day – when and where I need to spend my time – rather than just “making do” or “going through the motions” to keep things afloat at home.
Will you join me? What is the Lord prompting you to GIVE UP?
