This week has been a great week all-around. We have finished our Calendar Notebooks, Bible devotions and all papers BEFORE lunch everyday this week!!!! With a 2yr old, 3yr old and 2nd grader I’d say that’s an accomplishment and a SUCCESS!!! I was thrilled with how school went this week. By finishing our “book” work in the mornings it has freed us up to spend more time on History and Science in the afternoons. That way we weren’t too rushed and were able to really take in what we were learning. SO FUN!!!
This week started out with our first swim lessons for Mister Bull and Mister Mouse. Mister Bull is not “afraid” of the water, but timid. He was really inspired during the Summer Olympics by Michael Phelps. He decided he wants to be an Olympic swimmer, so we enrolled him and Mister Mouse in lessons. Mister Bull is learning to hold his breath and even swam under water a little! Mister Mouse was a little more timid, but stayed in the pool the entire time (an accomplishment)! I’m excited to see them progress and learn this year!!
One of my homeschooling goals is to be more HANDS-ON in our learning. So this week during our History lesson on the Destruction of Ninevah the kids played with Cloud Dough, which I of course found on Pinterest! Mister Bull built the wall around Ninevah and then destroyed it just like God did with the flood. Now, we didn’t use water to destroy it because that would ruin the dough. He just had fun knocking it down with his hands while I read the lesson aloud. Then Mister Bull and Miss Priss came over and had to get in on the fun too! Yes, there was a bit of mess to clean up, but watching my kids have so much fun playing in the dough and laughing together was TOTALLY worth it!!
Last week The Hubster discovered our pool had some “friends” dwelling in it. We now have “pet” tadpoles living in our pool. So at least once a day the kids make their way out to the pool to “investigate” the tadpoles. It has been a GREAT hands-on (not literally) Science lesson!! We’ve watched them for a week now. Last week they were simply tadpoles and this week their new little legs are starting to show!! Mister Bull is so excited about it all. I’m excited to see him soaking up the learning and having fun – not so much for the 90 million frogs that will soon inhabit our backyard!
Last weekend I scored an amazing tent and tunnel with like 50 plastic balls for only $5 at a neighborhood garage sale!! I may or may not have been more excited than my kids! They had more fun playing in the tent and tunnel than I could have ever imagined. Even Punkin’ got in on the FUN!!! They ate snacks in there and had a great time! This week the older 3 kids have also enjoyed playing Wii Fit Plus (top middle). Their favorite game is the Obstacle Course. Sometimes they just enjoy sitting together drinking milk (bottom middle). And sometimes the action of the day just wears a girl out! (bottom right)
Punkin’ (above left) sometimes joins us for “school time.” She enjoys looking at her googly-eye books and other board books. I even catch her “talking” to them on occasion! Mister Mouse has really started working hard on his notebook pages. He is really working hard to stay in the lines and trace his numbers and letters neatly – or as neatly as a 3yr old can! He is constantly asking me to “hep” him with his writing. I LOVE IT!!!!
Sometimes homeschooling takes place with nice, neat notebooks at a clean(ish) table and sometimes it takes place outside when you find a frog that blends in nearly perfectly with the bricks. Sometimes homeschool is wild and crazy in a tent and tunnel and sometimes it’s simply praising your 2yr old for “lining up” the magnets on the refrigerator. Sometimes its grading papers and sometimes it’s making the walls of Ninevah in Cloud Dough just so you can knock them down and do it all over again.
Ahhh…the joys of homeschooling! And I’ll be happy to do it all again next week!!
What did you do this week in your homeschooling?
