Large Family Living #3: It’s Never too Late to get started!

I know this post is a day late. But, like many (or even most) of you all I was busy with family celebrating the holiday and remembering loved ones. Thank you for understanding!!! Now, I will make up yesterday’s post and you’ll get today’s too! (I know, I know…I’m working on getting ahead again. I was good until I had my stay in the hospital. UGH!!! Still playing catch-up!)

If you’re just joining us for the first time, you can easily catch up here.

Many of you may be thinking, but I already have 3 kids or 5 kids and my house is a total chaotic mess!! Well…so was mine!!!! In fact, I didn’t start reorganizing our closet system until 4-5 months after our 4th child was born! So, believe me when I say, “It’s NEVER too late to get started!”

First things first though. You must have a plan!! If you just start taking things apart in your house and moving things around without a vision and master plan you’re going to quickly find yourself overwhelmed and lost! So, sit down and map out a plan. Do you want a central closet? Do you want/have a playroom for toys? Do you want some toys in the living room and how will that look? Define your spaces and areas so you will have a better vision of organization.

Second, take some time and browse the internet for ideas. I know this sounds silly, but believe you me there are so many WONDERFUL ideas out there!! Some I had thought of but didn’t know how to put into practice and some that were just crazy ingenious – you know the ones that make you say, DUH?!

Some great places to look are:

 Better Homes and Gardens

Martha Stewart

Other decorating sites

And, of course, my all time favorite…PINTEREST!!!! Seriously, you can find so many cute, simple, cheap ideas! I have found more ideas on this site than I have anywhere else. People who take advantage of dollar store items and re-vamp them into cute, practical storage solutions!! It’s simply ah-ma-zing what you can find on this site!! Utilize that search bar at the top left to make the most of your time!! Simply type in: playroom storage ideas, toys storage, closet organization – whatever you’re looking for, trust me…it will be there! And if you’re not on Pinterest yet, let me know and I’ll send you an invite via email!! You won’t be sorry!!!

Third, Take Your Time!!!! You don’t have to tackle your entire home in one weekend! Although, in theory it would be wonderful to have it all done, it will most likely completely stress out your husband, the kids and your dog to the point of meltdowns and crying fests (yours, not the kids)! So, I highly, highly suggest you take it in spurts and go slow. If you’ve really researched your options and have a plan in place you could probably finish a project in a weekend. But, don’t try to take on the whole house at once. Take it a room at a time.

Or go even smaller and join up with the 52 Weeks to an Organized Home site and follow their weekly organization. I’ve gotten off-track on this, but I still get the emails. They simply give you one task a week to help you organize your house. They started in the kitchen and have moved through the office and living room, I think. Like I said, I’m not really doing well on keeping up, but I enjoy reading their ideas and thoughts on how to organize!! I have put some of them into practice, even if I didn’t complete the entire weeks “assignment.”

So, there ya have it. Pretty simple and easy this week.

I hope you’re enjoying this series! I am enjoying writing it and really putting what I’ve found useful and helpful into words.

Join me next week as we wrap up with “Cooking for a Large Family: Making the Switch”!! Should beFUN!!!

Feel free to leave me a comment or a link to your favorite organization post/site!!

Blessings,

Annette
