You don’t have to wait until a certain age to teach your children how to pray without ceasing. It’s common for parents to wait until children are approaching teen years before laying these foundations, but I can tell you that you can’t go wrong by starting early. No matter the age, it is the will of God that all of His children become prayer warriors and foster the Spirit of prayer. This can start now, especially with the suggestions I have for you below and a printable Scripture journal.
10 Ways to Pray Without Ceasing
1. Make prayer a part of everyday life.
When it comes to fostering an attitude of prayer, it’s important to make it a part of you and your children’s daily life. Not only will you help them understand the importance of communicating with God, but you’ll also help them develop spiritual discipline in the area of prayer. Take time to introduce prayer – especially to young children – as a way to stay in constant communication with the Father. This can be done in everyday life through daily prayer.
2. Take specific prayer breaks throughout the day.
Forming the habit of praying daily can take some time, but one way to help you and your children get started is to set an alarm to go off at specific times throughout the day. During these times, everyone should stop what they are doing to pray. Everyone can find a solitary place, get on bended knees, and/or go to a prayer closet. These prayer times shouldn’t seem like a burden but to continue helping everyone in your family make praying a priority.
3. Hang Scripture or prayer cards in your home.
Another wonderful way to teach your children how to pray without ceasing is by hanging Scripture cards all over your home. God’s Word has always been the best way to get started with praying and having Scriptures to go to can help take the guesswork out of what to pray. These can be changed out every so often and also be geared toward certain topics. Scriptures have always been used to help understand the essence of prayer as well as used to create all kinds of prayers.
4. Start a prayer chain.
This can be done within your family, with friends from church, or other families in your homeschool group. With a prayer chain, everyone can submit something specific to pray for. To ensure you’re holding up your end of the chain, set aside times of prayer dedicated specifically for praying for other’s needs. These don’t have to be elaborate either! Use a short verse and simple words and pray as the Holy Spirit leads.
5. Write down specific things to pray for.
Another great way to teach praying without ceasing to children is by writing down things they want to pray for. Even the smallest thing deserves prayer and this will teach children that Heavenly Father cares about every aspect of our lives (even if we’re praying to get ice cream as a family). Realizing that God cares on a level we sometimes cannot understand is an essential element when teaching kids to communicate with Him confidently and openly.
6. Pray during worship time.
Sometimes prayer is only looked at as talking to God, but it can also be done through praise and worship. In fact, this is another form of prayer that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Create a playlist of you and your family’s favorite worship songs and play them aloud. Invite your children to sing out to the Father and allow the power of prayer to take over. Incorporating different ways to pray is sure to help create a lifestyle of prayer.
7. Do a daily prayer activity.
When teaching chidlren how to pray, you can include a daily prayer activity like coloring pages, a family devotional, or some other activity that will help them understand the idea of prayer. If you are homeschoolers like we are, you could use morning prayer (or evening prayer) as a set time to pray as a family. Speaking of which…
8. Pray together as a family.
Praying together as a family is one of the best and strongest ways to show your children how important prayer is. A child’s first time experiencing prayer should be with their family. This will help instill importance of talking to the Father and building a relationship with our Mediator Christ Jesus. Use bible verses as a way to teach chidlren what they can pray about and you can even have a share time. Encourage children to share their whole heart, including anxious thoughts, questions, and so on.
9. Spend time in silence before or after prayer.
Silence may not seem like prayer but we are also instructed to be still at times. It’s easy to get carried away in wanting to always talk and be heard, but we also need to teach our children the other side of prayer, which is listening for God’s small voice. This is a wonderful way to help make the most of your prayer times.
10. Use a prayer journal.
Prayer journals have always played a big role in my prayer life and walk with God. Using a journal – even for children – can help them document their prayer journal, keep track of prayers, answered prayers, and the like. These especially come in handy during private prayer moments. If you feel like you have a lack of prayer consistency in your life, try journaling!
Pray without Ceasing Mommy & Me Scripture Journals
If you’ve been following my Scripture journals, then you’ll be happy to know that August is dedicated to prayer. Throughout scripture we are taught to pray, the people of God are referred to as people of prayer, and this month’s verses are on prayer from the New Testament.
As you read and copy the Scriptures this month with your children, we encourage you to read the verses aloud. Feel free to read the surrounding context and discuss with your children what is happening that has prompted prayer in the passage. Pay attention to the overwhelming theme of prayer in the New Testament, as the method by which the believers unite with God for His purpose, His plan, and His glory!
