5 Reasons We Homeschool

Our first reasons for homeschooling are different from most. Our oldest has always been big for his age, but he is young for his grade. I knew right away that would be trouble, as he was often expected to act “older” than he was. I was certain we would be on the school speed dial by day two – three at the latest. Our second reason was class size. The classes in our school district were too large in my opinion and growing each year. I wanted him to have more one-on-one instruction time, which would help him stay on task and not get into trouble. Now that we’ve homeschooled for nearly 7 years, our reasons have changed.

Every family has reasons they homeschool, even if they change over the years. Here are 5 reasons we choose to homeschool. :: www.inallyoudo.net

5 Reasons We Homeschool

Personal Convictions

This was and still is the best choice for our family. In the beginning it was due to the reasons I explained earlier about our oldest child. Now, it is because we want our children to grow and learn in the areas that interest them. We don’t want them to struggle, but when they do we want them to get the one-on-one help they need…for as long as they need. As homeschoolers, we also get to control the curriculum that is brought in to our home. We get to pick and choose what books are read, not only according to their age and reading level, but our own convictions – personal, political and religious.

Political Convictions

It seems that political agendas seem to be forcing their way in to the public school system more and more these days. And while I don’t discuss politics on here, it is one major reason we will not send our kids to public school. No matter how “conservative” the school district and teachers are, they are bound by certain rules and regulations on what is taught and how, which we as homeschoolers do not have to abide by.

Religious Convictions

Yes, we now homeschool for religious convictions. While this is not something that comes from our “denomination”, it something that comes from our belief that we need to teach and raise our children with a strong Biblical worldview. For our family, we believe the best way to do that is through homeschooling. We do use curriculum that is Christian based and has a solid biblical foundation, which is one privilege of homeschooling. We are the first to answer our children’s questions about the Bible, the world and life – and I like that. They are gaining their knowledge from us, not from friends or teachers who have no investment in their eternal life.

More one-on-one and family time

I see the struggle with many parents, especially parents of multiple children, to get that quality one-on-one time with their kids. Homeschooling allows us to have that time with each of our children. Sometimes its spent doing school work, other times its spent doing read alouds they choose. We are also free to take a day trip with our kids, get in some extra family time. Often times that does include museums and other learning opportunities, but more importantly we are together as a family.

Flexibility

Homeschooling gives us the freedom to visit family or have family visit whenever schedules permit. We can schedule breaks as needed whether for family visits or because we just need a break. There is no “pushing through” to Spring Break or to Christmas – we go at our own pace. We are also free to homeschool year-round, giving us even more freedom and flexibility in our schedule. Another perk I particularly enjoy, is the any-time field trips. We are not bound by schools who can take only one a year or even every couple years. We are also not bound by weekends. Since my husband is off most Fridays, we usually take our day-trips then. There are less crowds and the kids get to experience more of the museum or zoo or whatever outing we chose that day.

Homeschooling is a part of our family. Other than our oldest who attended preschool, our kids have never had “school” outside the home. They have never even asked to go to school, because they know their most of the day would be spent at a desk inside four walls. They enjoy the freedom homeschooling offers much more than the structure of a school. And I am okay with that.

I love this! Its actually similar to our reasons (we start in the fall). My oldest is in kindergarten ps, and every day i wish i would’ve decided sooner so he never had to go to school for 7h and expected to no be “so silly during carpet time” or come home with some weird stories.

I am so sorry he is going through that, but don’t be too hard on yourself. You have made the decision now and moving forward you can do what is best for him and his learning style! Enjoy the summer!!
