Have you ever used unit studies in your homeschool? If you have never done this, then this is an excellent way to breathe new life into your homeschool. I would describe a unit study as a themed learning activity that may go on for an extended time. You could also explain it as being a series of learning about the same topic. Homeschoolers use unit studies as a way of learning intensely about topics they’re interested in.

I have found that doing a unit study can breathe new life into our homeschool journey. It can get old working on the same books and lessons, but when you branch off to learn about something new, this is truly eye-opening. Follow along as I talk about how unit studies can change up your homeschooling, in a good way.
Benefits of Unit Studies
What are the benefits of unit studies? A lot of homeschoolers find that unit studies are great for many reasons. This is an opportunity for the whole family to learn about something. Kids ages 1-18 can all learn about something at the same time. The really cool thing is that each kid will walk away learning something new.
Another benefit of homeschooling is it gives parents an opportunity to create their own materials. Researching and gathering material for your children to learn is a very fun thing! Short term unit studies also keep homeschooling interesting. Changing up the topic is a fun way to keep learning.
Student-Directed Learning
One major way you can breathe new life into your homeschool through unit studies is by allowing student-directed learning. Unit studies are a perfect example of student-directed learning. These unit studies can focus on areas that the kids are interested in learning. When kids get a chance to explore something that interests them, you will be amazed at how this changes their outlook on learning.
Multiple Children and Different Ages
If you need a break from the traditional learning method, then unit studies are the way to go. You can teach multiple children and multiple ages, which is something I talked about earlier. This is a major break for mom and dad. Plus, the kids get to spend time working together, which is great!
Thinking Outside of the Box
Let’s be honest, sometimes we all get sick of thinking inside of the box. This is where unit studies can be a breath of fresh air. Thinking outside of the box is common with unit studies. Unit studies allow you to make connections to other subjects. Think about how great it is that a unit study can count as math, reading, writing, science, and so much more!
Working Together
Have you ever seen your kids work together? I’m sure you have! However, unit studies give the whole family a chance to work together. Everyone is doing projects together, learning together, discussing together. So, in a way you’re bonding together, which is a great part of homeschooling and being together.
Encourage the Use of the Imagination
As a homeschooling family, you are probably hoping your kids get the opportunity to use their imagination from time to time. With this thought in mind, imagine how much using imagination can breathe like into your homeschool through unit studies. Your kids also get to use their creativity and focus on their thinking skills. Unit studies allow for a lot of thinking, which is great for anyone, especially our kids.
More Time to Study
Unit studies don’t necessarily have a time frame for them. You can work on a theme for as short or as long as you’d like. If the unit study you’re currently working on is boring, you can always jump to a new one. Unit studies are interest-based for the most part. I love that you get as much time as you need to work on them!
Something Different
Homeschooling is about doing something different if you want. You don’t have to follow the mainstream way of schooling. If you wake up one day and want to learn about why elephants are so big, then you can. Unit studies truly instill a love of learning in kids. It teaches them to find answers to the questions that they have! Be encouraged because unit studies are a great way to do something different in your everyday homeschooling life.
Now that you know more about them, you may be able to breathe new life into your homeschool through unit studies. Do you plan on doing a unit study soon?

Unit studies sound so great but then when Ive attempted them they’ve never quite worked for us.
They definitely take some getting used to. 😉
