Using farm themed activities for preschoolers is the perfect way to introduce spring-related concepts and topics to your little learners. There’s something about a farm that screams spring and all the things that come with it. This theme also provides a variety of rich learning experiences that can help piece together concepts and skills.

Benefits of Using Farm Themed Activities for Preschoolers

Through a series of learning objectives, you can introduce your preschoolers to the world of life on a farm. The best part of thematic studies – especially like this one – is you can plan specific content that caters to the development level of your child. Here are some other benefits that make farm themed activities a must-have in your homeschool.

Preschoolers can learn how to identify farm animals.

Farm animals are often some of the first types of animals introduced to children. Why? Because they are what’s commonly known and used in everyday life, whether it’s tied to the food purchased from a grocery store or seen from the car on a day’s drive. Using activities to teach about farm animals can also help make the connections between what they see and what the animals names are.

Farm themed activities for preschoolers teach animal life cycles.

It’s not long before kids start wondering where the babies come from and what they’re called. This is the perfect opportunity to teach them about farm animal life cycles. I love to curiosity of children, especially when they’re trying to figure out mommies and daddies in the animal world. They can also learn the baby animal names, and the different names they are called as they grow into adult animals.

Activities provide preschoolers with lots of hands-on learning.

Whether they are doing a coloring page, matching animal cards, or playing in a farm-related sensory bin, preschoolers can get a lot of hands-on practice with farm themed activities. There are also opportunities for taking field trips to farms and seeing firsthand how things work on a real farm. Some places will even let kids milk cows, pet chickens, and ride horses.

Farm Themed Activities for Preschoolers that Build Language Arts

If you’re homeschooling multiple kids around the preschool to early elementary age, then you may be wondering if there are resources that can be used to teach all your kids. The answer is, “Yes!” I have created two resources in particular that will help your little learners build their vocabulary, practice writing by building sentences, and more.

Farm Life Word Building Challenges

Calling all Lego-loving kids! This unique resource guides your children in building farm-related words using Lego bricks. They can also use other small objects (with supervision, of course). The pictures of the animals are next to each word, which will help with learning the animal names, spelling, and pronouncing them. There are word building challenges for the following animals:

  • horse
  • rooster
  • duck
  • sheep
  • cow
  • chicks chicken

And two bonus words: barn and farm. You can even make several copies and use the strips to play a matching game!

Farm Life Build and Write Challenges

This resource is for slightly older kids who are able to write; however, if you want to do it with your preschooler, simply have them dictate their answers to you and you write them down on the activity pages. This is the perfect way to involve all of your children in the learning process. The build and write challenges encourage your kids to build a variety of things using prompts and their imagination. The card prompts say things like, “Build a”:

  • barn
  • horse
  • sheep
  • the word farm

And several more! Then it’s accompanied by activity pages that ask your kids to build and write. For example, they may be asked to build a barn and give directions on how to build it. This would make for a humorous and interesting story if you asked your preschooler to describe how to build a barn. But it also helps them to use critical thinking skills and what they may already know (or imagine).

These are also reproducible and come with two different sets of lined paper: one for those learning how to write and one for those who are fluid with writing. Pick up these resources in my shop and use them when teaching your kids about life on a farm.
