I’m a big believer in the idea that kids should write about whatever will get them writing. Some kids won’t want to use these Football Writing Prompts and that’s fine. How To Use Football Writing Prompts

One of the most important rules for using writing prompts is that there are no rules. Give your students as much freedom as possible. that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t set a minimum word count for kids who won’t apply themselves. It just means you allow maximum room for creativity in regards to format, style, and content when it comes to creative writing. 

If your student wants to change up the story starter so that it’s about their favorite football player or favorite team- they have that freedom.

The Actual Football Writing Prompts

I highly recommend you download our free printable as the gnome illustrations truly do make the story starters come alive. I’m including them in this post for reference and so that you can perhaps use this list as a fast way to pick your topic. You can use them without the illustrated paper but your student will be missing out. 

1. You are quite certain you are the biggest fan of your favorite football team ever. Explain and defend your title of “Biggest Fan Ever.”
2. With just thirty seconds left in the game, you have the ball. Describe the last thirty seconds of gameplay in the first person. 
3. As the game announcer, you’ve just witnessed history. Describe that history-making moment in great detail. 
4. You won a round-trip ticket to watch the football team of your choice and eat dinner afterward with your favorite player on the team. Describe the experience including the team name, player’s name, and the events of the evening. 
5. You just got recruited to play for a team you’ve always loved. Describe how this happens, how you feel about it, and what happens next. 
6. Explain why your favorite team is the best in the league. 
7. Write about your party for the big football game of your choice. Describe the planning process, the menu, the location, the people present, and the events of the evening. 
8. Your favorite team just got a new name and a new hometown. Describe how this makes you feel and why. 
9. What if you could purchase the team of your choice? What would your first action as owner be and what would you change about your new team?
10. Thoroughly describe football to someone who has never watched a game.
11. You have just attended your first live in-person college football game. Describe the stadium, the food, the people, the players and coaches, the television crew, and the game. 
12. You and your best friend are planning to attend a big game together. You want to be amazing, supportive fans. How will you prepare for the big day?
13. With just five seconds left in the game, you score a touchdown for your team. Describe what happens next. 
14. In the first quarter of the game, your coach sees something unexpected in the opposing team and quickly instructs you to run a play your team has never run before. How do you quickly adapt and communicate to pull off this new play? Describe what happens. 
15. During halftime of the big game, you watch an amazing show on the field. Describe the show in great detail. 
16. In an amazing turn of events, you are chosen to participate in a halftime field goal challenge for a huge prize. Describe the contest as it unfolds. 
17. You’ve been invited to coordinate a dream-team football event for charity. Describe your two dream teams and defend your choices.
18. As the quarterback, you have a major leadership role for your team. Describe a day in the life of yourself as quarterback. It does not have to be a game day. 
19. You just ran forty yards to score a touchdown for your team right before half-time. Describe your thoughts and actions as you catch, run and deliver a touchdown to your teammates and fans. 
20. At the end of the biggest game of your life, you are on the losing team. Describe how you feel, how you overcome the disappointment, and how you prepare for your next big game. 
21. Fans from both the winning team and the losing team are mad at you the referee, after a game ends with a one point margin. Describe your response.
