It took me a little while to notice this, but gnomes are a big deal right now. Now that I’m in the know, I wanted to pull together an awesome gnomie list of resources for moms and teachers. I’ve found all kinds of other goodies for you to create a fantastic week of gnom-ish fun for your kids or classroom during the month of December. To top it off, I’ve just published my beautiful new Christmas Gnomes Counting Book which you’ll find at the end of this post, and I couldn’t be more excited! You’re going to love these gnome activities for kids!

But first…can I just share with you how much I’ve fallen in love with gnomes this year? I wasn’t sure about them at first and honestly thought they were just another fad, like the llamas. So I didn’t think much of them until one of my dear friends from back home started making them. And oh my goodness…I totally fell in love with them! I even got two of them from her for our Christmas decorations this year. Check out our Gnome inspired Christmas display in the trailer this year.
Can you see them? We have two – the Santa she made to match our “tree” and stockings that we already had picked out, and NOEL the elf (which I bought at the shop where she sells them). The “Noel” on the front matches the hat on our Santa, so it was perfect! I mean…aren’t they adorable?! My kids have added their bear, our singing Santa, the nutcracker one daughter painted and a reindeer.

What exactly are gnomes?
According to Wikipedia, a gnome is a mythological creature from the Renaissance, rumored to be a small humanoid that lives underground as part of the spirit world. When I think of gnomes, I think of the British comedy Gnomeo and Juliet, which was most embarrassingly the introduction of Shakespeare to several of my children. After I remembered the movie, I think of quirky and cute little statues and funny cartoons.
Another favorite movie of my children is the more recent, Sherlock Gnomes. My kids love mysteries and fun movies and this one fits both! Bringing back the characters from Gnomeo & Juliet, this fun cartoon adventure is full of laughs and mystery, which makes for a super great family movie night! I’d love to know in the comments – what do you think of when you hear the word “gnome”?
