Having a Firm FOUNDATION of Faith

As a Christian parent, I believe my most important job is to help my children come to their own faith and belief. While I pray it is Christianity that they follow, I do not want to push my beliefs on them. I want them to have their own faith.

Teaching our children to have a FIRM Foundation of Faith is paramount in this ever changing world. Check out how our family does it with this new resource! :: www.inallyoudo.net

It needs to be personal…or it won’t last. Believe me. I have seen it time and time again. As an RA during my time at Bible College, there were many long nights of talking spent in my room with students who questioned their faith and belief. Some of it came from a new cynical view of the world as their once faithful, loving parents signed the divorce papers as soon as the youngest went off to college. And some came from the fact they they simply believed whatever they were told, wholeheartedly and without reservations, but also without research and coming to a knowledge of Jesus Christ and His saving power themselves.

It was a long year.

It was a rough year.

In the last 11 years since I graduated and in the rise of social media, I have reconnected with some of them. Some are wonderful, Christian women with families of their own. And some have turned down another path and chosen a more secular, worldly life than what the Bible teaches. It saddens me to see the rising trend of people in their mid 30’s and older falling away from the faith they had. All because it wasn’t personal.

As a parent, this is my greatest fear. I want my children to know and understand God and Jesus Christ on a personal level.

want them to follow Him without abandon.

But before they can do that, they must know and understand the foundations of our faith.

A FIRM foundation of Faith.

Even though our oldest reads his Bible everyday, and I firmly believe in God’s Word having power over us if we truly open our hearts, I think it is also necessary to help them understand how and why we believe what we believe.

Enter – FOUNDATIONS OF FAITH. I was so excited when I saw this new product from Kim Sorguis at Not Consumed. Of course I knew it was going to be fabulous, as all of her other products are amazing.

I am so impressed with this new Bible study packet from Kim. It’s more than just a fun packet, it really helps kids dig in to the deep issues surrounding our culture today. It takes them through Biblical Foundations, to establish the inerrancy of God’s Word to what we believe on the Hot Topics of today.

The Biblical Foundations section approaches subjects like “Who is God?” and “Why am I here?” to “Inerrancy of the Bible” and “Discernment”.

The What Do I Believe? section approaches Hot Topics, such as “Purity” and “Media” to “Sanctity of Marriage” and “Sanctity of Life” and more.

There are two different levels available for this study – Youth and Junior. They both cover the same topics, but the Junior level has larger space between the lines and room to draw a picture, rather than write a full page explanation.

The parent guide is necessary in this study, as it gives the Scriptures needed to read, additional literature to read and questions to discuss in the What Do I Believe? section as you work together to write out what your family actually believes. NOTE: Through this section, I recommend using discretion as some subjects may be sensitive (i.e. Sanctity of Life). Use your own judgement as to what is appropriate for your own children. Some may be able to understand and take in more, while the basics are good enough at the time being for others.

I also recommend not prompting your child in their answers, but rather use them as further discussion to help them come to an understanding on their own. This way they come to the belief and faith on their own, not from persuasion or coercion, and it is personal – something they truly believe and can take ownership. This is the beginning of a solid foundation of faith – one that will last for years and can withstand trials as they get older.
