One way to enhance your child’s writing skills is with build and write challenges. You may have never heard of these but they sound exactly like their name. Your child will be given an opportunity to build a challenge, and write about one as well. Don’t let the word “challenge” scare you (or your child) though. These are actually fun activities that your children will love. Here’s why!

The Benefits of Build & Write Challenges

These challenges can be done for just about anything you can think of: particular subjects of study, Legos, holidays, and the like. The overall goal is to give your child a fun and unique way to work on skills they have already been taught. From a parent-teacher perspective, build and write write challenges help with:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Following directions
  • Critical thinking
  • Creativity
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Building confidence

Build and write challenges help keep children’s minds sharp while sneaking in some review of reading, writing, and whatever subject/topic the challenge pertains to. For these reasons, I created a series of themed-specific build and write challenges that you can easily implement in your homeschool lessons. Valentine’s Day Build and Write Challenges and Valentine’s Day Word Building Challenges are just a few packs I have created to help my kids and yours practice reading, writing, creating art, and more.

Details About the Build and Write Challenges

While each pack has a specific theme, they also incorporate several different subjects and developmental milestones:

  • English Language Arts
  • Letter/Word Recognition
  • Math
  • History
  • Research

And this isn’t all. These resources are created with different learning styles and ages of children in mind. All of the writing prompts are appropriate for children of any age and there are also two sets of writing lined paper to accommodate younger writers and older writers. If your child cannot write at all, that’s okay! Use the dictation method and have them verbally tell you their answer and you write it for them.

Ways to use build and write challenges

These challenges are also easy to expand on. For example, one challenge will ask children to build a letter. But don’t stop there! Have your children build other letters too. Another challenge may ask them to build an object of a certain color. Afterward, ask them to build it using their favorite color. The possibilities are almost endless with these activities.

You’ll also enjoy the writing prompts. They aren’t too hard, yet increase slightly in difficulty. They give statements that can make for some very good conversations. In the meantime, your kids will learn about a variety of subjects and concepts.
