Learning About Johnny Appleseed for Kids

Johnny Appleseed was a nickname given to John Chapman as he was known as the appleseed man. He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1774. He had a dream to be able to produce so many apples that no one in the world would ever go hungry.

He is a great person to learn about when you are studying about apples and Johnny Appleseed Day.

History of Johnny Appleseed

His adventures began in the early years of his life when he was just 18 years old. As a young man he traveled west with his brother following the immigrants and early pioneers. In his early twenties he began traveling alone, which he did for the rest of his life. 

Around 1800 he began collecting apple seeds from cider orchards in Pennsylvania and began his trek westward to plant apple trees. He continued to plant apple seeds as he traveled west. He planted an apple orchard every where he went and sold and gave away seeds so people could feed themselves and make a living off of the apples.

The Legend of Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed was a legendary figure known through folk tales and fictional stories. He was known for his love of the Bible and being a missionary, preaching to those he met. He had a kind heart and a love for animals and nature.

Folklore paints him as a funny looking character with how he dressed with crazy hair under a pan hat, trousers and bare feet. He was known to trade apple trees with early pioneers for their old cast off clothes. 

Legends and a tall tale says that he carried a leather bag around with apple seeds planting them throughout the American wilderness and in open places along forests, streams and roadways.
