Our Favorite Ways to Teach the Alphabet to Preschoolers

Are you looking for a fun way to teach the alphabet to preschoolers? Having had several preschoolers of my own, I can tell you that young children learn in many different ways. That’s why I’ve put together some great ideas to help you teach your little learner in the best way according to their unique learning style.

How to Teach the Alphabet to Preschoolers

The most important thing to keep in mind is to give your preschooler a great start to learning their alphabet. After all, the foundations laid now will determine how well they will pick up on reading later. The good news is at this age, you can bank on lots of learning fun to build a strong foundation. Here are some ways to do just that.

Start teaching the letters of the alphabet.

Most parents may start with one letter type at a time; however, you can teach both lowercase letters and uppercase letters simultaneously. This will help with letter recognition and memorizing which letters go together. A few supplies to keep on hand to quickly review letters are alphabet cards, magnetic letters, and a good alphabet song. Go over individual letters on a daily basis until they can recognize the names of the letters without help.

Teach letter sounds with the letter names.

One of the most commonly missed steps is to teach the sounds letters make while teaching the names of the letters. This increased skill of alphabet recognition will help your little learner reach much quicker and easier. Most 3 year olds are not quite ready to read, but you can help set the stage for it. Use fun games with little learners to help them learn the sounds each letter makes. You can play Simon Says or Repeat After Me to help with this concept.

Use a letter of the week study.

Using an alphabet unit study is another starting point for teaching the alphabet. Most units include alphabet games, flash cards, and other fun alphabet activities. As you introduce each new one, have your kiddos trace letters, listen to letters sounds, and practice identifying them in words. For example, you can have your child name letters they see in their name. Units also typically use alphabet printables.

If you’re homeschooling a mix of young and older kids, it can help to have resources that foster independent learning. For teaching letters, you can set aside one-on-one time for the overall concept introduction. Then, gather a few resources, like my Apples to Zebras Workbook along with abc games, dot markers (for hands-on activities), and other manipulatives for little hands for individual practice.

We like to use bricks and building blocks to help create meaningful activities that incorporate the important part of teaching letters. I created a free ABC Build & Write Challenges resource that combines several letter recognition activities. This resource is perfect for little ones to practice their fine motor skills in a variety of ways. This set includes one page per letter with handwriting practice, number pages (0-9) with handwriting practice, plus smaller flashcard-type pages.

We also like to use picture books to teach the alphabet. The more colorful and realistic, the better. You can use books to point out a specific letter or simply to reiterate the entire alphabet. Picking a book and sticking with it for a few days at a time will also help with your child’s memorization. After about a week with the same book, my children could typically begin reading it back to me!
