Today’s DIY project comes from the ever popular Subway Art. You see it everywhere, unless you’re my husband and have no idea what subway art is…then you don’t see it everywhere.
Every year my mom, her parents and a group from their church travel toNuevo Laredo,Mexicoto visit, encourage and help out with a sister church’s VBS. My mom has coordinated this trip for nearly 13 years. She has built relationships with the missionaries there and enjoys seeing the kids each year.
One of her “jobs” as the coordinator is to come up with a craft for the week. They learned many years ago that doing a different craft every day was difficult to say the least. (They do a morning & evening VBS that includes 300+ kids.) Several years ago they decided that doing one craft that lasted all week was the way to go. So, she usually comes up with a concept and then figures out how to stretch it out over the course of the week.
And this year was a Scripture Verse Subway Art Canvas inspired by none other than…Pinterest!!!! Yep, I got my mom hooked on Pinterest a while back and now she’s gone a little crazy. Not as crazy as me (yet), but crazy.
These canvases turned out so cute that I just thought they were too perfect and cute not to share. Now, keep in mind these are the samples made for kids inMexico. These kids like lots of bright colors (and I mean LOTS) and tons of stickers, paper, glitter – basically, their philosophy is the more the better. I know here inAmericawe probably wouldn’t do them quite like this, but you’ll get the idea. And I can’t wait to show you some pictures from their trip! I will be posting those in a couple weeks after they return.
First, you paint the canvas. The younger kids are doing only 1 coat of paint, but the older kids are doing a base color and an accent color.
The Scriptures were first typed up in a Word document and then printed on a variety of papers with backgrounds.
Then, cut at close to the lines as possible, so the kids have more room to decorate the rest of the canvas.
Next, glue or mod podge the Scriptures on.
Then, allow the kids to add stickers to their hearts content.
Next, Mod Podge over everything. The whole entire canvas. I, personally, would do two coats just for safe keeping. But, one will work too.
Last, they attached ribbons or twine to hang them.
Aren’t they super cute?! I just know the kids inMexico are gonna love these. So bright, cheery and full of God’s Word!!!! And if you think about this week, please pray for the group. Last year temps reached 120 degrees in the shade!! Thankfully that was their last day there, but it is known to be HOT!! Pray not only for our group, but also for the kids that will attend throughout the week and the workers (the locals that attend the churches). I am told it is always a blessed and fun-filled week, but an exhausting one too. Thank you!!!
What have you done this week? Feel free to share in the comments or link up to your own DIY post!!!
Blessings,
Annette
