The History of St. Patrick’s Day
I thought it’d be neat to include a mini-history lesson to go along with these St. Patrick’s day homeschool activities because most people have no idea who Saint Patrick is or what he even did. The truth of the matter is, March 17th wasn’t always celebrated with wearing green, baking green shamrock cookies, or following rainbows to a pot of gold. There is quite a story behind the real meaning of St. Patrick’s Day.
The Story of St. Patrick
St. Patrick was the bishop of Ireland and born sometime during the 5th century. Born in Britain, he was arrested before his 17th birthday by Irish raiders and transported to Ireland. He worked alone as a herdman for six years during which he became a devout Christian.
He escaped his master by ship and was able to reunite with his family; however, during his escape, he came really close to starvation and inevitably suffered a second brief captivity in the meantime. St. Patrick believed his calling was to return home and become a missionary in Ireland. In pursuing this belief, he joined the priesthood and was ordained as a bishop.
He would then make his way back to Ireland in 433 and begin his mission of converting the Irish to Christianity with the goal of making them “people of God.” He used the shamrock, the national flower for Ireland, as a way to explain the Trinity to nonbelievers. St. Patrick was known for performing mass baptisms and conformations in his relentless efforts to serve the Lord.
The First Celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day
Many accounts have the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in America beginning in the early 1600s. It quickly became a national phenomenon as more Irish families emigrated to the United States. In fact, Boston’s first official St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in 1737, with New York City following suit in 1762.
During the mid-1800s, the Irish would begin making their way to Canada and Australia. The potato famine forced the starving families off the Emerald Isle, and naturally, they took their Saint Patty’s Day festivities with them. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration observed by millions, many of whom aren’t even Irish.
