Teaching kids about grace doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. In fact, you don’t have to wait for them to learn about it in some Sunday school lesson. Instead, you can teach kids about the grace of God with several biblical resources and activities. Keep reading to learn my best tips for teaching God’s grace to kids of all age groups.
Teaching Kids about Grace: God’s Unmerited Favor
Define the good news God’s grace through His Word.
One of the best ways to introduce grace, especially for the first time, is by using Scripture itself. There are a number of Scripture translations and children’s bibles that have glossaries and study notes to help make it easier to explain. You can also locate specific scriptures about grace and make them part of your daily family bible study time.
Use bible stories that highlight grace.
There are lots of bible stories that can be shown to your kids that highlight grace, but here are just a few to get you started:
- Noah (Genesis 6:8)
- Abraham and Sarah’s disbelief (Genesis 12:3)
- Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32)
Teach kids about God’s amazing grace through bible lessons.
We don’t want to rule out bible lessons completely, as they are a great way to help kids get a hands-on understanding of God’s unmerited favor. You can use any kind of grace-related activity page to reiterate this concept for kids. They are also fun and engaging!
Be open to having hard conversations.
As kids begin learning about biblical concepts, their own thoughts may try to rationalize what they’re learning – and that’s okay! In fact, we should encourage more conversations where they are able to talk openly about what something means to them along with any doubts of understanding. I believe this is the way the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, would have been with children.
A Resource to Help Teach about God’s Grace
Grace: His Unmerited Favor Mommy & Me Scripture Journals
As Christians, we need to pay attention to another word in the Old Testament, “favor” which is often used to convey the idea of unmerited favor – or grace. Grace is a concept and a characteristic of God and is how He has treated His people. For God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
As you read and copy the Scriptures in this journal with your children, we encourage you to read the verses aloud. Feel free to read the surrounding context and discuss with your children what grace means in the passage. We would also encourage you to re-read the verses replacing the words “grace” or “favor” with “unmerited favor”, for we tend to forget that grace and favor from God are such great things because they are always unmerited.
Final Thoughts
How do you teach your children about grace? Use the tips and resources above to help make the task easier, engaging, and more fun to live an abundant life in the love of Jesus. And as always, don’t forget to pray about it. God will always lead you in the right ways when teaching His character to your kids!
