Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. Not because of the gifts I would get as a child, but because I knew we would have time with family. My cousins all lived in the same state, but with uncles as ministers, we rarely saw each other because weekends were taken.
Now that I am married with my own children and we live over 600 miles from family, we’ve started our own traditions. My girls love to watch Countdown to Christmas on the Hallmark channels with me. But we also try to watch a few Christmas favorites together as a family.
One of their absolute favorites is “The Grinch”! They love both the original animated and the live-action versions. So this year, I’m stepping it up and giving them a fun movie study to complete after we watch both versions (usually back-to-back, because we’re weird that way).

Movie studies may seem a little counter-productive as far as homeschooling goes, but I find them helpful. I mean, if my kids are gonna watch movies, why not make it a learning experience too! Am I right?! These are also a great alternative to book reports, for those who are reluctant.
Discussion Questions
Discussion Questions are a great way to help kids work on their comprehension skills. Have children watch the movie first for fun and try to answer the questions. If they have trouble, they can re-watch the movie, this time really paying attention and listening for the answers!
The discussion questions are perfect for kids of all ages. You can ask them in a group format or give each child a copy of the questions and have them write out their answers on their own paper . Giving them their own paper sneaks in a little handwriting and spelling practice too!
Compare & Contrast
I love doing compare and contrast pages with my kids, especially with a zen diagram. It is a fun way to help kids pay closer attention and really see the differences and similarities in two characters. There are three compare & contrast pages in this set. One compares two characters, one compares the book and the movie, and one compares the animated and live versions! These pages could be a pre-cursor to a descriptive or an expository essay.

Learn about Dr. Seuss
Have your kids do a little research about the life of the famous Dr. Seuss, creator of “The Grinch”. This is a fun way to introduce them to research, or give them some extra practice. With simple prompts to help guide them, this page can be a springboard for a paper or just left as is.
Just a little Grammar
This time we added a little grammar fun to your learning! Kids can work on synonyms and antonyms with some key words from the story. I encourage you to let them try this without a dictionary or thesaurus to really get their brains working. They will also learn briefly about alliteration and simile, which can be super fun-ny!!

Throw a Watch Party
Since this is one of our favorite movies, I decided we need a fun watch party for our kids. Make a day of it with some fun themed snacks and treats. Maybe we’ll invite some friends over too! You could even plan a weekend marathon and watch the old favorites, followed by a surprise trip to see the new release!
I found so many fun and even simple Grinch themed treats! These can be made ahead of time or ask the kids to help – they will love it! Here are a few of my favorites!
