Winter Writing Prompts for Middle & High School

I loved having writing prompts in high school. It made it so much easier to have a starting point, from which I could brainstorm. Since we are working on improving our oldest sons writing skills, I have decided we need some seasonal writing prompts starting with winter. Hopefully these writing prompts are a great way to help them brainstorm and get their creative juices flowing, even prompting them to write their own short stories or essays.

These winter themed writing prompts are perfect for Middle and High Schoolers and even include an idea page for teachers and/or parents. The prompts are organized by type, but you can easily mix them up and pull from them at random. The writing prompts cover all four main writing styles – narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive.

If these writing styles are mastered throughout middle and high school, they will have a great foundation for college. I tutored many college students who graduated with B averages and higher that couldn’t write a proper essay. I do not want that for my own children (or yours), so we will be using writing prompts to help!
