Our homeschooling journey started when our oldest was entering kindergarten. He had attended our church preschool, so this was our first go at homeschooling and we just jumped right in. We are now entering our 8th year of homeschooling and I have to say…we’ve changed so much.

My mom always told me that each child was different, but I didn’t truly believe her until we started homeschooling our three middle children. Our oldest learned to read very early on in his kindergarten year. Our oldest loves science, history and all things engineering. He loves LEGO building and using his imagination when playing outside. He best learns through fun and games.

Our youngest daughter is the same way. Replace science and history with princesses and ponies, add a Disney-writer sized dose of imagination and you’ve pretty much summed up her life. That’s when I realized in order to help her learn better, we needed fun. And lots of it.

3 Ways to Make Early Learning Fun

  1. COLOR – Whether or not they love to color, I’ve found that kids love to see colors. I have found that my children love the more colorful pages and seem to respond really well when we use them. The bright, vibrant colors catch and hold their attention and make the lessons fun.
  2. PUZZLES – I don’t know about your children, but mine absolutely love puzzles. We had roughly 150 puzzles in our closet just before our last garage sale. A little crazy? Maybe. But, they love doing them and they help work those critical thinking skills.
  3. GAMES – My children love games. Dice games, card games, board games – you name it, they love it. Playing games with young children to help them with a particular skill or learning process can make learning fun.

For the last year and a half, I’ve been working on a project that I am so excited to finally share with you today! With my desire to create more hands-on learning and help make learning her letters more fun, Apples to Zebras was born.

  1. I’m thinking art and music resources. They are an area we don’t have much right now.

    1. I agree! We love art and music, but struggle to make them a regular part of our homeschool.

  2. Thank you for offering this complete resource! I was only toying with the idea of homeschooling my daughter, who is 2.5 years old now. Only now that I see that there are resources like this, I feel confident that we can both succeed in this. I am interested in the Thomas Jefferson style of homeschooling, and I think your book will be a perfect addition to getting my daughter started on the right path. Thanks again for taking the time to create this!
