We are closing in on the last week of our Across the USA in 31 Days series. Every day this month I have shared a small sample of printables from my larger eBook, which will be released next week. I hope you have enjoyed this month as we traveled from state to state across the USA.
Utah. Truthfully, this isn’t a state I have thought much about visiting. However, after seeing some pictures on a friends’ timeline, I might just find time to visit one day. The Utah Territory was comprised of the modern states of Utah and Nevada as well as portions of modern Wyoming and Colorado. It was established with the Compromise of 1850 and Fillmore, named after President Fillmore, was the capital. The state gets its name from the name of the Ute Tribe, which means “people of the mountains” in their native language. In 1856, Salt Lake City replaced Fillmore as the state capital. Utah was later admitted to the Union as the 45th state on January 4, 1896.
The Utah state flower is the Sego Lily. The flower has a history in the state as told by Kate C. Snow, President of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in a letter dated April 17, 1930. She said that between the years of 1840 and 1851, food was very scarce due to crickets devouring the crops. “Families were put on rations, and during this time they learned to dig for and to eat the soft, bulbous root of the Sego Lily. The memory of this use, quite as much as the natural beauty of the flower, caused it to be selected in after years by the Legislature as the floral emblem of the State.” After a census was taken of the state’s school children on their preference, the Sego Lily was made the official state flower by the Utah State Legislature approved on March 18, 1911. The flower has white, lilac or yellow flowers and can grow between six and eight inches high on open grass and sage range lands in the Great Basin during the summer months. Today you can download these Utah State Flower Coloring Pages and let the kids color while you learn more about this flower. The coloring pages are available in print for the pre-writers, dotted manuscript for early writers and dotted cursive for upper elementary.
