Holidays are the perfect time to change up your school day with thematic activities like our Easter counting activities for preschoolers. Young children love connecting everything in their lives around a central theme, and even more so when it’s something exciting like Easter! Whether its clothes, snacks, playtime, or schoolwork, themes are a fun way to learn. Counting is fun!

Can my preschooler really learn using an Easter theme?

Most new homeschoolers like to stick to modern-day education practices that align with using standard textbooks, workbooks, and checklists to make sure specific milestones are reached by a certain timeframe. Ask any veteran homeschooler like myself, and we’ll all agree that you can (and SHOULD) use themed-style learning, especially in the early years. Anytime you can use something that’s part of everyday life, concepts become more real.

Below are just a few concepts preschoolers can learn through Easter-themed math activities:

  • number words
  • number recognition
  • number sense
  • sight words (gets into cross-subjects)
  • alphabet letters and sound

In addition to those concepts, there are also other math skills young learners are able to practice:

  • fine motor skills
  • simple addition problems
  • basic skills for problem solving
  • early addition skills

Easter Counting Activities for Preschoolers

Counting activities can be done in a variety of ways. You can use math worksheets, free printables, a counting game, play dough with Easter counting mats, and more. The idea is to provide early learners with lots of opportunities to learn according to their style. I have some creative ideas for you below.

Learning about numbers is way more interesting when you can use real-life objects like jelly beans, plastic Easter eggs, or even Easter books to bring the lesson to life! I’ve put together a list of Easter math activities for preschoolers your student is going to thoroughly enjoy and make learning fun.

Counting With Jelly Beans

You can make almost any Easter counting worksheet “epic” just by adding jelly beans to the mix. In our Gnomes Counting Book, for instance, you can use the jelly beans to demonstrate one-to-one correspondence and fill in the ten-squares with the candies. You can also skip count with jelly beans. Have your student arrange the candies in sets of two, three, five, or ten.

Pick Up Your Toys to Earn Jelly Beans

Have your child count and earn one jelly bean for every five toys he picks up in his room. Not only will your little one be keeping track of how many toys, but he’ll also be counting his jelly beans as he fills up a plastic baggy. Instead of having your student only count to five, have them count to ten and point out that this is two jelly beans or two sets of five. Use a recording sheet to keep track and reward your child when a goal is reached.

Counting with Easter Eggs

An Easter Egg hunt is the perfect time to work on counting skills because you need to keep track of how many eggs are hidden and how many eggs are found. Even though your big kids will probably want to take over, give the job of counting the eggs to your preschool child. Use an egg carton to help them count in groups of 12.

Counting Place Settings

Any time you can get your preschool child to help set the table for dinner, you can use place settings to practice counting. He or she can count each plate as it is placed, count the silverware, count napkins, etc. Preschool children take pride in being *the person* who sets the table for your special Resurrection Sunday dinner, especially if you just happen to be at Grandma’s house.

Count Easter Decorations

As you drive down the street, ask your preschool student to look for Easter-related yard signs or window decals and count them. Sometimes people hang egg ornaments from trees and go all out. You can ask in your local neighborhood moms group if anyone knows where an all-out decorated house is for the holiday, and do a drive-by.

Filling Easter Eggs

If you need to fill plastic eggs with candy for the church, for an egg hunt, or for your own family your young children will love to help! Have them count each candy placed in the egg so that “all of the eggs are made equally.” If you’re a no-candy family, have your kids fill the eggs with Easter-colored pom poms or mini erasers.

Counting Easter Grass Strands

Easter grass gets everywhere and chances are good at the end of the day, you’ll need to do a little bit of clean-up. Have your preschool child help you find and count all the stray strands of Easter grass and throw them away. Or save them for next year if you do that instead. Now, this might get tedious, so of course, play it by ear and stop when it becomes too much.

More Quick Educational Easter Activities

Just in case you need a few more activity ideas, here are some to try:

  • Use a number card and have young students count out the correct number using a math manipulative.
  • Create a math center and use a sensory bin filled with mini Easter bunnies, small plastic eggs, and other counting supplies for a fun Easter math activity.
  • Reuse a small Easter basket for collecting and counting eggs.
  • Let your child help you make cute bunny pancakes. Cooking involves lots of math.
