When most of us think about the heart of David, we easily think of him being a man after God’s own heart. David’s heart seemed to be one of purity, but also one that is relatable. From being a young shepherd boy to the battle lines, we can use the story of David for teaching our children valuable life lessons.

Learning to Walk with God: Having the Heart of David

David’s character shows us how we can be used by God.

When reading the story of how David was to be crowned king of Israel, his outward appearance would have instantly discredited him. He wasn’t as big as his brothers and Scripture actually describes him to be small and ruddy. It is encouraging to see that despite what man may see, God’s will has a plan for everyone. This is a valuable lesson that kids can relate to, especially in difficult times of believing they have a purpose and/or finding it.

Walking with God increases our faith.

David is primarily popular because of his absolute faith when facing the mighty men of the Philistine army, especially Goliath. No one else had the courage (or faith) to face the giant, but David did. He knew the Spirit of God would bless him with the strength needed to prevent being slain by the hand of this Philistine. David’s response is one that we can adopt today anytime we are faced with seemingly difficult trials.

David’s heart shows the grace of Heavenly Father.

David’s character wasn’t always upright and he didn’t always exhibit a pure heart. In the book of Psalms, we can read about the ups and downs in the life of David. He would frequently call out for help and ask for the heart of God at the same time. His steadfast love for God would bring about God’s abundant mercy, something that every human being needs. Thanks to Christ Jesus and His wonderful deeds, we have access to the Spirit of the Lord.

How to Use the Heart of David as a Bible Study

In addition to the lessons that can be learned from David’s life, they can also be used as a valuable bible study. For starters, you can incorporate the Psalms into your daily or weekly bible reading with your children. From his sinful natures to his following the commandment of the Lord, David’s example can create a great road map to becoming a person who follows after God’s own heart.

I created the Walking with God Mommy & Me Scripture Journals to help with this very thing. Filled with daily Scripture prompts and space for journaling, the daily meeting time with your children and God will have long-lasting impacts. As you go through the study this month, seek after God with all your heart, just as David did. Ask God to open your ears to hear His voice, your eyes to see only Him and your heart to follow boldly after Him.
