My husband and I are big fans of J.R.R. Tolkien. I have read all the Lord of the Rings books and of course, we’ve watched the movies – more than a few times. My husband has even hosted a few “marathon movie days” for friends. Since our kids are with us most of the time, we have passed the same love on to our own kids.

Our oldest saw The Lord of the Rings movies several years ago and has watched them multiple times (sometimes on his own) since. Our middle three have seen parts of them, but not all of them as the girls don’t always do well with the violence. However, once they saw the first movie, they were hooked. That’s when my husband decided to start reading the books to them at bedtime.

For several months it became an obsession almost, because once he started, they didn’t want him to stop. Even though they had seen the movies, they were pointing out differences in the stories and learning as they listened.

While it has been a few years since I read the books, I did peek in every now and then to hear him reading. But truth be told, I enjoyed hearing my children’s reactions and growing curiosity more than the stories.

Now that our oldest has read the books himself, I thought it was time to use that to my advantage. I can hardly ever get him to practice his cursive writing, because he thinks print is faster. However, I know it is important for him to master the skill, so I am creating a series of cursive copywork.

This series will include quotes from books both Middle and High Schoolers can read. However, I do not know your children or their maturity level, so please use your own judgement as to what copywork and books are appropriate for your child.

Today I am sharing quotes from the prequel in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring series, The Hobbit.
