Have you been trying to get your kids excited about writing? When it comes to creative writing, story cubes are a great way to get your child excited about the writing process. We’re going to talk about story cubes and how they can help make writing a little more grand, specifically creative writing. Let’s talk about practicing creative writing with story cubes.

What Are Story Cubes?
Out of curiosity, how many of you are familiar with story cubes? There is no judgment from me if you aren’t familiar with how this works. Story cubes are traditionally something that looks like dice. However, instead of numbers, there are pictures. You throw the cubes and from there, a story is born. How does this help with creative writing?
Story Cubes & Creative Writing
For some people, writer’s block is a real thing and it can be so hard to create a story out of nothing. When it comes to creative writing, sometimes you have to be creative. Story cubes allow you to take the stress off of your own imagination. I like to joke that it gives your imagination a jump start. For kids that have a hard time knowing where to start with their writing, this can be a huge win! Story cubes allow kids to create their own stories with the help of rolling the “dice.”
Focusing On One Subject
Creative writing can be hard to start because your mind is going all over the place. I like using the story cubes because it helps get your writing off to a good start. Sometimes you have too many good ideas and you don’t know where to focus. The story cube could land on a butterfly. From there, start writing a story about a butterfly.
Another way to use story cubes is to allow your child to roll the dice at least 5 times. Using those five pictures, your child can create their very own story. It’s amazing how a story can unfold a little easier when you have all the pieces to the puzzle.
