Simply put, creative writing is just a “looser” way of writing that allows for an expansive amount of creativity. If your kids are tired of writing about all the serious topics, perhaps it’s time to have a little more fun with writing by allowing them more say in their schooling, or the topics that they are writing about!

Creative writing encompasses so many of the important aspects of Language Arts; grammar, spelling, reading, writing, format, editing- but the vast difference that sets this type of writing apart is that you have so much room to make it all fun and of interest to your individual homeschooler!

Where these topics can usually be mundane and confusing, creative writing allows for much more expressive and personalized teaching and learning opportunities!

If you’re looking for more ways to encourage your children to think positively about Language Arts, then this is the perfect thing to focus on!

Tips for Teaching Creative Writing in Your Homeschool

Have you ever thought about how you can teach creative writing in a creative way? If you’re going to teach writing to your kids, it doesn’t have to be difficult! In fact, there are some really fun ways in which you can get your kids on board with creative writing.

Have Fun With It

No amount of writing is going to be intriguing if there isn’t something interesting to focus on. When you’re teaching creative writing in your homeschool, be sure to let your kids have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to laugh a little! You’d be amazed what comes out when you give your children a little leeway with their writing, too.

While it’s important that you give them a few serious topics, but give them the opportunity to also enjoy writing on the funny ones.

Creative writing really helps the fun and quirky side come out of your kids! And you’ll be entertained watching them enjoy the learning process!

Show a Good Example

I have learned that one of the best ways to teach anything is to show and/or be a good example. Whether you’re good at writing or not, this is a really fun way to get your kids to see how fun writing can be!

If they see you doing it and having fun with, they are more likely to also have fun when you teach creative writing in your homeschool!

More ideas:

    • write a story together
    • set a timer and see who can craft the best story
    • have a competition and invite a family member to judge
    • let them choose the topic for you to write

Model Creative Writing

Modeling creative writing to your kids can be very important and extremely beneficial! Providing an example is one thing, but you can also show modeling in other ways.

Find a great book, story, or poem that fits your child’s interest and then read it together, act it out, or even assign it to be analyzed as a project.

By showing them examples of other people’s writings, you can show how much fun and relatable creative writing can be. Be sure to gather plenty of examples to show your child so that they can make the connection several types of literature.

Assign Writing Prompts

Another way to teach your kids creative writing is by doing writing prompts. You’ll have a ton of fun giving your kids writing prompts and allowing them to express themselves through creative writing. Sometimes writing prompts are exactly what is needed to get writing on the right path!

Play Music While Writing

Another way to make creative writing a little more fun is to play music in the background. Music helps to set a mood, create an atmosphere, and even opens the mind to better connect with the things around them.

Simply think of the first time you heard your favorite song or what was playing during a special time in your life. Usually, we can remember the things we wore, the people we were with, the smells, the times, the feelings- those connections help stir memories and associate the senses with the surroundings.

Some kids just need a little music in the background to help them get motivated and thinking. you can even play different kinds of music.

A few genres of music:

  • Classical
  • Country
  • Theatrical
  • R & B

Try Brainstorming or Mind Mapping

Creative writing can come differently for many people, and you may find that your kids do better with the help of brainstorming. They may not need any other help, but time to work through their thoughts can be very beneficial.

You could even explain different types of brainstorming, like mind mapping or a simple brain dump. This is an excellent way to get kids excited when you’re teaching creative writing in your homeschool!
