Having a few patriotic activities for kids on hand can make learning about Independence Day much more fun and exciting. Below are several activity ideas for kids of all ages, as well as fun printables and worksheets you can download and print for free!
Patriotic Activities for Kids
Here are several great ideas and simple ways to teach your kids about the fourth of July in creative and innovative ways.
STEM Activity Ideas
Whether you have little learners or older children, STEM activities can accommodate any age, grade, and learning ability. They are a great way to work on small motor skills while making learning fun:
- Patriotic Paint Bombs (Steamsational)
- Straw Rockets (Buggy & Buddy)
- Patriotic Ice Melting (Little Bins for Little Hands)
- Build an American Flag with Legos (Little Bins for Little Hands)
- Red, White, and Blue Slime (Steamsational)
Easy Patriotic Crafts
There are many crafts you can do for little hands (and the not-so-little). For starters, use popsicle sticks to create an American flag. Provide your kids with red, white, and blue paint as well as clear gems for the “stars.” They’ll need one for the flag pole and 6-8 craft sticks for the red and white stripes. Once they are painted and assembled, paint a blue square in the top left corner and then glue on the clear gems. You can also use star stickers.
Another idea is to make fireworks with pipe cleaners and a paper plate. Attach the pipe cleaners to the paper plate with tape and twist and turn them in different directions. Use a hole punch to put a hole in the top and string a piece of yarn through the hole. Hang them up for a homemade fireworks display.
Last but not least, have a go at making some patriotic wind socks.
4th of July Celebration
If you’re looking for a unique way to start a new family tradition, having your own Independence Day celebration is something to consider. While most towns have local fireworks and other patriotic activities, you can set up your own patriotic carnival in your backyard. Set up a face painting station with blue paint for painting stars.
Have a blue sensory bin with red and white materials. Or, you can sing patriotic songs. And don’t forget to stop by your local library and pick up a great collection of patriotic picture books that you can use for storytime.
