My oldest loves to read…now. When he was younger, reading was more about completing the assignment. It wasn’t until he was in 5th grade that he found a book series that really interested him and got him hooked on reading. Since then, I have tried to incorporate books on topics and subjects they enjoy to encourage my younger ones to read more.
But sometimes I choose books to read that relate to our studies. This year we have been talking and studying more about elections and the voting process. We are learning about all the different offices – locally, statewide and national offices. From mayors to the president, we have been learning about the requirements of each office and those who have held or are currently holding that office.

But let’s be honest, studying the different offices isn’t all that exciting. In fact, it’s kinda boring. So I have been adding in some books for them to read to help it be a little more interesting. One fun book I found was Madam President by Lane Smith. So of course, we put together a book study too!
Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is probably one of the most difficult aspects of reading to teach. Mostly because I don’t think you can actually teach it, but rather it is learned through repetition and exercises. That’s probably one reason I love using book studies when we read. It somewhat forces them to read to comprehend and not just read the words to read them.
Sight Words
Honestly, I’m not sure elementary kids are ever too old to have sight words. There are always new words to learn and understand. In this printable pack, you’ll find eight sight words from the book that elementary kids may or may not know. You can use these cards as a fun memory game, spelling game or just to introduce the words to your kids.

Vocabulary & Spelling Practice
Included in this pack are three pages of spelling practice sheets. Spelling is another great way to introduce new words and help kids learn them. Use these printable practice sheets for kids to practice their handwriting by copying the words several times. Turn them into vocabulary words by asking them to look up and write out the definition of the word as it relates to the book and story. Then use this as your weekly spelling list to bring it all together!
Becoming President
I remember fantasizing as a child about becoming president. Or at the very least, being the daughter of a president. With this pack, children can dream about being the president with a write-and-draw activity page. Kids can describe the office of president in their own words and draw themselves as the president. There is also a page to complete about the current president, which makes this pack usable at any time!
