I love musicals. I always have. Music is like sunshine to my soul. We almost always have some type of music playing in our house. My husband and I were both music majors in college, so it was our daily life. During my first four pregnancies, I was either a part of the choir at our church or on the praise team playing keyboard, so my babies practically came out singing.

My children love music too. You can catch them singing or humming songs all day long. I even have one child who likes to make up her own songs according to what she is doing at the time. She sings about coloring, sweeping, cooking, cleaning…life

Whether you love musicals, old movies or just Singing in the Rain, this movie study is a fun addition to your studies. It is a classic movie musical with great humor, wonderful music and some of the best dancing you'll see. #moviestudy #SingingintheRain #iaydhomeschoolers #iaydcommunity #iaydhsmoms #homeschoolers

Just like me, my kids are big fans of musicals and old movies. One of the favorite movies is Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang. They have probably watched it more than fifty times and know every line and song by heart. I love that they have a fondness for the old classics. They are so clean and perfect viewing for children.

And since they love the old classics, I have been introducing them to some of my favorite classic musicals. Singing in the Rain is probably one of my absolute favorites. So when I decided we were going to start watching it, I knew we needed a movie study to go along with it! And this movie study has it all!

Discussion Questions

Discussion Questions are a great way to help kids work on their comprehension skills. You can also use the discussion questions to help them start a paper. The answers can be the points for an outline or to help them write a simple summary of the movie.

The discussion questions are great for kids of all ages. You can ask them in a group format or give each child a copy of the questions and have them write out their answers on their own paper . Giving them their own paper sneaks in a little handwriting and spelling practice too!

Silent Films

This page encourages students to not only watch some silent films, but learn more about them as well. Through questions and prompts, students will research and learn all about silent films – how they were made, challenges and benefits of them, techniques used and more.

Compare & Contrast

Have your kids ever seen a silent film? I know mine haven’t, aside from excerpts in other movies. Singing in the Rain has excerpts of a silent film being made and the “transition” to sound in films. It is honestly one of my favorite sections of the movie. The humorous issues they encounter with the microphone and Lena’s voice make me laugh every time. This page allows students to explore the benefits and drawbacks of both silent films and modern movies.

Character Assessment

Using character traits to describe a person is a great way to expand your students vocabulary. They can use synonyms and antonyms of common words, as well as explore new character traits. What types of things does the character do? Describe their actions and appearance using adjectives. This is a great precursor to writing a descriptive paper.
