One of my kids’ favorite activities to do when they are first learning sounds and words is rhyming. They love making up silly words and hearing what real words actually rhyme. It is always a great time of laughter. But what do you do if they struggle with rhyming? How can you help them?
Sometimes it just takes time for them be able to hear and distinguish those sounds, so it’s hard for them to rhyme all the time. One thing I’ve found that helps is to use books. Rhyming books are a great way to help kids start to hear and learn to distinguish those sounds.

And one of our favorites is Splat the Cat. My kids found one the Rob Scotton books a few years back when we visited the library. After the first fun-filled pages, they were hooked. They loved the silliness of the story. And the playfulness of the pictures. They couldn’t get enough. We read that one book over and over.
And then each time we went back to the library they would search and search for a different Splat the Cat book to take home and read. And two years later, they still love them! So of course we needed a printable pack! This book activities printable pack is based on first book in the series, the original Splat the Cat.
Comprehension Questions
Reading comprehension is a great thing for kids to work on, even as an early reader. Helping them learn to remember and focus on the story as a whole is important as they grow in their reading skills. These questions are simple, but will require them to pay attention.
Synonyms
I love teaching my kids about synonyms (and antonyms). It is so fun to hear them try to think of words with similar meanings. It is a great way to increase their vocabulary too. On this page they will think of synonyms for ten different words.
Nouns and Verbs
Without nouns and verbs you can’t have a sentence. And of course without sentences, there would be no stories. So of course we have to learn what they are! Using these 24 words, they will learn to recognize both nouns and verbs.
Sight Words
Since Splat the Cat books are great for early readers, we needed to include some sight word practice. There are 20 sight words they can trace and practice reading on this page. They will also find each of these words in the book!
Learn about Cats
Kids can learn all about cats on this page. These simple questions are a fun way to introduce them to research and how to find information about a topic.
