One of the biggest benefits of homeschooling is being able to use just about anything to teach your kids. February is one of those months where we use holidays such as Valentine’s Day to teach outside the box. If you’ve been looking for a unique way to teach math to your little learners, you’ll love my tips and ideas below as well as my free Valentine’s Day Math Worksheets for preschoolers. Grab your free Valentine math packet at the bottom of the post.
Benefits of Using Preschool Counting Worksheets
Counting worksheets help preschoolers work on fine motor skills.
Preschoolers like to be hands-on and typically thrive with hands-on learning. Worksheets give them the opportunity to work with pencils and crayons but you can also use play dough, mini teddy bears, candy hearts, and other math manipulatives with valentine worksheets too. The printable pages in the free pack below gives your preschooler lots of activities in one.
Themed activities add a bit of extra fun to learning.
As tempting as it may be to stick with traditional learning, incorporating themed activities into your lesson plans can be so much fun for younger children. You can create themed activities by creating math centers filled with valentine math activities, putting together sensory bins, and/or doing valentine’s day theme printable activities.
Preschool counting worksheets are a great way to teach number sense.
Preschoolers undergo learning lots of basic math skills, two of the most important being number recognition and number sense. Valentine activities and free printable worksheets help assist in teaching (and learning) math concepts and give your little ones extra math practice that’s lots of fun.
Number Activities Ideas
Besides using Valentine’s worksheets, you can also do other things to teach early math skills. The Valentine’s Day math activities ideas below are ideal for both preschool and kindergarten students:
- Include a coloring page or two
- Write numbers in sugar (or sand), leaving some out, and have them fill in the missing numbers.
- Practice letter sounds while counting.
- Do a Valentine’s Day heart craft.
- Put candy hearts in piles and have them count the number of hearts in each one.
- Use printable cards for a number activity.
To help make sure you’re incorporating fun ways for your kids to learn, you can use a recording sheet (similar to lesson plans) to keep track of what activity you’ve completed each day, along with notes of how your child responded to them. Any seasoned homeschooler will tell you that you don’t want to keep doing something that your child doesn’t like or take well to. Keeping track of this will help you include activities and lessons they are drawn to.
